Taiwan build Art Museum – A Cross-age Dialogue of Construction | Inter-age dialogue between structure and craftsmanship

As the reuse of old buildings has become an important issue, how to give new ideas to the exterior and interior functions of buildings constructed in different periods under the premise of small-scale demolition and interference, introduce new design concepts and contemporary materials and structures, and integrate the old and the new The structure, structure, and space of the building, and extending the life of the old building through the operation and maintenance of the museum are the main challenges for the reuse of the old building in this case.

Taiwan build Art Museum – A Cross-age Dialogue of Construction | Corridors

Due to the timber collection and distribution requirements of Alishan Forest Farm and the important location of the transportation hub in the Western Corridor, Chiayi City has gained the reputation of “Wood Capital”. With the advancement of reinforced concrete technology, wood, which was once an important building material, gradually withdrew from Taiwan’s construction industry chain in the second half of the 20th century.

However, due to the high carbon emissions and limited life span of reinforced concrete materials, and the leap in production technology of wood with negative carbon emissions, in the 21st century, the museum that combines two new and old building materials for renovation reflects an important contemporary Sexual significance: Retaining the old reinforced concrete buildings, supplemented by the reconstruction of wooden structures to improve seismic performance and comfort, responding to the theme of Chiayi “Wood Capital”.

The new exterior wall adopts multi-layer solid wood structural laminated lumber (CLT) in the process to replace the original reinforced concrete exterior walls on the west and south sides of Building B, which not only reduces the building weight by 30%, but also greatly improves the thermal insulation performance. The facade adopts a glass curtain wall and uses the same open vocabulary to connect the facade images of the three buildings A, B, and C in series.

Facing the direction of the square, the designer used integrated wooden beams to build a three-story hall with a large area of structural glass façade, turning the entrance of the art gallery to face a landscaped atrium-like an “urban living room”. This transformation makes the open space that originally lacked individuality-the remaining open space facing the juxtaposition of different buildings, transformed into a landscaped plaza with individuality and cohesion through the rearrangement of the building facade, and becomes a landscaped square that can retain the residents’ memory Greenspace.
