The Apple Experience Store in Marina Bay, Singapore, designed by the Foster + Partners design unit
Apple Marina Bay Sands has created a new unique experience store next to Singapore’s Marina Bay. The 30-meter-diameter structure is an all-glass dome with a black glass base. The design is the result of close collaboration between the Apple design team and the Foster + Partners design team.
David Summerfield of Foster + Partners said: “The design is all about permeability and the subtle interplay between light and shadow. The structure eliminates the boundary between inside and outside, creating a small platform that floats gently on the water. , Overlooking the bay and Singapore’s spectacular skyline. “
Structurally, the dome acts as a hybrid steel and glass shell, where a steel cross-section grille supports the weight of the glass and sunshade devices, and the curved structural glass panel laterally limits the steel elements and reinforces the overall shape to withstand lateral loads. The integrated shading device keeps the room cool. Each piece of glass is carefully selected and meets the glass indicators specified by Singapore’s Green Building Mark.
Each multifunctional concentric lightweight sunshade narrows in size as it rises to the top of the building, thus providing sound absorption for the shop. More importantly, they spread sunlight onto the deflector above, creating a magical effect and dematerializing the structure. At the top, translucent eyeballs provide light throughout the space, reminiscent of the famous Pantheon in Rome.
Stefan Behling of Foster + Partners said: “The dome changes rapidly. The effect is very calm and the light intensity and color changes are fascinating. This is not only a celebration of Apple’s amazing products but also a celebration of light”.
The garden city of Singapore flows from the waterfront into the interior space. Ten trees are positioned along the perimeter. The leaves provide extra shade and soft highlights and shadows. It also offers a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere of the shops and the beautiful view of the pier.
The shop can be accessed through the Marina Bay Sands shopping center. In the entrance, there is a beautiful curved stone door, flanked by an iconic Apple Avenue display measuring 45 meters long and 7.6 meters wide. Here is a series of eye-catching escalators. Take tourists on a “kaleidoscopic” journey into the center of the spectacular dome space.
This radically different transition from the retail center to the Apple Dome offers customers a dramatic and exhilarating experience, with breathtaking views of the bay and city. During the day, the dome reflects the colors of the surrounding water and sky, while at night the subtle interior lighting emits a warm glow and enhances everyone’s experience of Singapore’s spectacular skyline.
